I built this collaborative piece titled 'Improvanation' with #forrestgard #adamgellings and James Minor for The Game Show at #easegallery . Composed of salvaged wood, clay, paper, and latex paint, the piece is one big game board with all the elements necessary to play a game: character pieces, dice, action cards, and a spinner. The only thing not supplied are the rules. As the title suggests, players are to improvise and negotiate the rules of play. In this way the collaborative process is extended from the makers to the players-performers.
'My Golden Chimera' is the product of a collaboration with the poet Brad Modlin. Our collaborative process consisted of a number of back and forth challenges. Initially, I chose a number of colors from the hardware store based on their titles. I was seeking words that seemed evocative or "poetic." These colors were then composed in a number of painted line compositions which were presented to Brad along with the color titles. From these sketches Brad composed a three part poem containing versions of the paint titles as words in the poem. This poem, 'On Chimeras and the Cost of Selling Loose Cigarettes in New York,' served as a numerical guide to the construction of the final painting, 'My Golden Chimera.'
