The Subtle Sea portrays the hidden world of contemporary oceanic shipping. In this exhibition I reinterpret classic tropes of the Maritime genre such as ship portraits and shipwrecks as seen in the work of Turner, Gericault, and the nameless sea monster specialists of 16th century Amsterdam. Recurring scenes of disaster serve as simple meditations on universal themes of mortality and loss, while referencing contemporary anxieties around capitalism, consumption and environmental collapse.
